LOTR Rosie's Wedding Dress

Not much of this dress is visible in the movie, but thankfully the docos on the EE dvd have given a lot better view of the dress overall. However, there are still a number of details that need nutting out. Here are screen caps for reference.

Probably the best overall shot from the movie. You can just see the pointed waist of the bodice, how narrow the bottom of the centre front panel of the bodice is and that it has some sort of pattern on it. You can also see a pattern on the sleeves, the trim along the edge of the overskirt and the trim across the underskirt. Appears to have piping down bodice seams, and possibly along bottom edge. Colours look quite pale here.

Good shot of the bodice front on, showing sweetheart neckline with some flowers (appear to be the same as some in the headdress) in the middle. Pattern on centre front panel a bit clearer - I'm guessing some sort of brocade, with additional darker purple near the edge of the panel. Can also see the rose pendant she is wearing.

Great shot of the pattern on the sleeve, and can see the pattern on the centre front panel a little clearer. At this angle the main bodice colour looks quite different to the ribbons from the headdress. Note you can't see a chemise under the bodice. I'm sure there was something under there, even if just for laundry purposes, but you can't see it.

Can make out some sort of looping pattern on the overskirt. Best shot of the flowers along the overskirt edge, and the trim across the underskirt.

Shock! Horror! A full length shot!!! ;-) Here you can see that the bottom corner of the overskirt is folded back to some sort of tie (though whether this is functional or decorative is hard to tell), though I don't quite know how to explain the apparent gap just below that where the underskirt can be seen. You can also see an interuption to the drape of the underskirt, hinting at a second row of trim across it. Interesting choice of footwear too...

Sketch of the dress. A second row of trim is shown across the underskirt, however the trim on the overskirt is displayed differently, and the skirt corners are not folded back. There also seems to be another white layer between the white overskirt and yellow underskirt with no trim on it. You can also just make out a shawl that was later abandoned (made the dress too busy according to Peter).

Rear shot of dress. You can see that there is quite a gap in the back of the bodice, with a modesty panel evident underneath. I can also make out the fold back of the overskirt, and what is probably a bow on either side. There appears to be ~something~ between these, but it's not clear enough to be certain what. Here it looks like some or of strip of fabric draping between the two bows. Something white can also be seen under the underskirt, my guess is a petticoat.

Rear shot of dress. Better shot of the lacing on the bodice (I count about 9 or 10 pairs of grommets), with the high neck obscurred by the hair. You can also better see a bow where the corner of the overskirt folds back to. It seems to 'pouf' oddly between these two bows, as though the skirt is caught up a little on my theorised strip of fabric, or there are two white layers, and the poufing is from the top layer being gathered up a bit.

Shot of the headress. I need to brush up on my flowers, I don't really have an idea what these are!

  1. This is so helpful, thank you! I was going crazy trying to find a solid reference to her outfit.
